A pregnant woman with a fever and a dying man could
use a doctor. Luckily one just arrived in town, complete with his
father's medical bag. Unfortunately, he may not be as skilled as
his brother likes to make out.

Jeremiah and Kurdy arrive in Slag Harbor to meet
Jimmy Holcomb, hoping he can put them in touch with a man called
Farralon, mentioned in Simon's notes as someone who may know how
to stop the Big Death. When they find Jimmy, he's near death, with
fluid in his lungs and tumours. He was being used as a guinea-pig
for a possible vaccine for the Big Death - Farralon clearly believing
the disease isn't gone for good. The vaccine gave him the tumours.
He was on his way to meet Farralon on the Willamette to give a sample
of his blood. When he dies, Jeremiah takes the sample, hoping to get
it to Farralon for examination.
Reece and his brother Jake are touring towns,
Reece claiming to be a doctor.
We learnt in flashback that Jeremiah's brother
was shot trying to steal sausages.
"He's the doctor - I'm just the brains of the outfit." - Jake
Kurdy: "She was like the ladies in one of those
paintings - Botticello or something. All white linen and rose petals,
with both of us just floatin'… her dress all hiked up…"
Jeremiah: "I never figured you for an art lover."
Jimmy Holcomb and "Reece Davenport, M.D." are rare examples
of people outside Thunder Mountain who use their surname. The name 'Holcomb'
was briefly visible written on a page of Simon's
journal in
"The Long Road".
Does Farralon have some connection with Valhalla Sector?
Remember that John's flashback (
"Man of Iron, Woman Under Glass"
) appeared to show him being experimented on.
Simon's abortive journey towards an enclave on the
Willamette River would likely put the action of this episode in Oregon.
Therefore Slag Harbor would most likely be on the west coast of North
America. Although it's not clear how much time has passed since the last
episode, the need to conserve fuel suggests Jeremiah and Kurdy have been
gradually working their way west. If so, Clare, who set sail last
episode, might well wash up on the east coast of China, where, according
to one rumour from the pilot, armies are massing…
They seem to leave the Rover out in the open a lot in
this episode - though to be fair they're usually parking it with some
emergency.
Sam Egan's first story is a little more pedestrian
that Straczynski's episodes, and the script could use a lighter touch
in places, but it's still good. A shame Kurdy didn't keep his puppy.
