I am an intelligent, creative and
self-motivated graduate with a degree in English from
Cambridge University and an MSc with distinction in
Software Development, with particular talent for
programming. I am seeking to begin a career in software
development, hoping to draw on and further my experience of
teamwork, meeting deadlines, working under pressure and
demonstrating flexibility.

MSc with Distinction - Software Development, from Leeds
Metropolitan University (2002 to 2003)
This course stimulated my growing interest in current software
development via modules on:
- Databases and emerging data management technologies
- Object-Oriented analysis, design, programming and system
construction
- Integrated Systems
- Computer architecture and communications
For my dissertation project I designed and
produced tools for generating and managing an on-line 3D art
gallery. I enjoyed the challenge of learning new technical skills
quickly and to a high standard.
Further details are given below under Technical Skills.
MA (2:2) - English, from Churchill College, Cambridge
University (1995 to 1998)
On this course I developed my analytical and written skills. I
enjoyed the degree of self-motivation, and demonstrating the
consistent ability to meet deadlines.
A Levels (1995)
Four passes: Grade A for English Language and Literature, and
General Studies; Grade B for Mathematics and Physics.
GCSEs (1993)
Nine passes at Grade A or B, including Grade A for English
Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Physics.
- Java
-
- I wrote the code for my dissertation project using the
Java 3D API, for which I received a distinction.
- I also obtained a mark of 91% for the "Object Oriented
Programming" module assessment.
- SQL
-
- I developed a database using the Oracle RDBMS for the
"Databases" module of my MSc. This involved producing an
E-R diagram; creating tables using Oracle DDL; populating
the database with test data; and producing several complex
test SQL queries.
- I received a mark of 84% for this assessment, including
25/25 for the queries section.
- Unix and Java RMI
-
- I performed a demonstration of a distributed system for
the "Integrated Systems" module. For this demonstration, I
queried an Access database using a server running on my
home Windows machine, via a client running on Solaris on a
University computer.
- I received a mark of 93% for this assessment, including
48/50 for documented Java code; 18/20 for a written
explanation of the working of this distributed system; and
10/10 for the demonstration itself.
- HTML, CSS and JavaScript
-
- I have produced a personal website for which I have
written all HTML, CSS and JavaScript code to current W3C
standards where appropriate. This includes a version of the
popular game Tetris, written entirely using JavaScript,
HTML and CSS.
- As part of my dissertation project I generated HTML
files from within a Java program, based on artist and
artwork information from a data-store.
I am currently studying C++ and PHP / MySQL to further extend
my technical range.
Executables and code samples for any of the above will be
supplied on request.
Business Sales Advisor (and other roles), at Family Hampers
Ltd., Leeds (1999 to 2002)
Family Hampers specialises in delivering seasonal gifts and
products during the Christmas period. Among my varied duties
while working there:
- I wrote new training tutorials for the databases, and
updated existing training notes
- I assisted with the training and mentoring of temporary
staff
- I conceived and produced new procedures including an
improved order confirmation report
- I developed database forms and tables, and wrote many SQL
queries and reports for the Customer Services and Operations
departments
- Under secondment to the Operations department I
administered several key traffic streams
More generally, I relished the opportunity to develop my
team-working skills, and demonstrate my flexibility and
originality of thought.
As part of my personal website I am working on an episode
guide to the US television drama Jeremiah. I
maintain my interest in creative writing through fiction, poetry
and music.
